In this short note, we show how to use a highly accurate finite-difference scheme to compute second derivatives in the Navier–Stokes equations while ensuring targeted numerical dissipation. This approach, essentially non conservative, is shown to be close to an upwind method and is straightforward to implement with a negligible computational extra cost. The benefit offered by the resulting discrete operator is illustrated for the direct computation of sound in aeroacoustics and in the more general context of large-eddy simulation through connections with hyperviscosity and spectral vanishing viscosity. 2011 Elsevier Inc. Mixed Large-Eddy Simulation Model for Turbulent Flows across Tube Bundles Using Parallel Coupled Multiblock NS Solver

In this study, turbulent flow around a tube bundle in non-orthogonal grid is simulated using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique and parallelization of fully coupled Navier – Stokes (NS) equations. To model the small eddies, the Smagorinsky and a mixed model was used. This model represents the effect of dissipation and the grid-scale and subgrid-scale interactions. The fully coupled NS eq...

Numerical dissipation vs. subgrid-scale modelling for large eddy simulation

This study presents an alternative way to perform large eddy simulation based on a targeted numerical dissipation introduced by the discretization of the viscous term. It is shown that this regularisation technique is equivalent to the use of spectral vanishing viscosity. The flexibility of the method ensures high-order accuracy while controlling the level and spectral features of this purely n...

Impact of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation on hydromagnetic unsteady flow over an exponentially inclined preamble stretching sheet

The present numerical attempt deals the sway to transfer of heat and mass characteristics on the time-dependent hydromagnetic boundary layer flow of a viscous fluid over an exponentially inclined preamble stretching. Furthermore, the role of viscous heating, thermal radiation, uneven energy gain or loss, velocity slip, thermal slip and solutal slips are depicted. The prevailing time-dependent P...

New Differential Operators and Discretization Methods for Large-eddy Simulation and Regularization Modeling

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are limited to relatively low-Reynolds numbers. Therefore, dynamically less complex mathematical formulations are necessary for coarse-grain simulations. Regularization and eddy-viscosity models for Large-Eddy Simulation are examples thereof. They rely on differential operators that should be able to capture well d...
